Starter squad: building a team you will enjoy playing

Formation, links and roles. How we would put together a first eleven that plays well, before thinking about ratings.

A good first squad is not the one with the highest overall. It is the one that does what you ask on the pitch.

Pick a formation you understand

A 4-3-3 is the easiest place to start: four at the back, a midfield three with one holder, and two wide forwards around a striker. It is the default shape in our builder for that reason.

Spine first

Centre-back, holding midfielder and striker decide most games. Put your best defender, your calmest midfielder and your fastest finisher there before filling the wings.

Shared leagues and nations help

Players who share a league, club or nation tend to work better together in squad modes. When two options are close, pick the one that connects to the players around him or her.

Wide players need pace, full-backs need stamina

Wingers live on acceleration. Full-backs run all game. If you have to compromise on rating anywhere, compromise in central midfield, where positioning and passing matter more than speed.

Test, then tweak

Play five matches before changing anything. Patterns show up quickly: if you keep conceding in behind, you need a faster centre-back; if you cannot create chances, you need a midfielder who passes forward.
