Squad rating maths, explained without the jargon
Why one big card lifts a squad so much, how to aim for a target rating, and the quick mental check we use before submitting.
Most challenges ask for a minimum team rating. Knowing roughly how that number is built saves a lot of trial and error.
Step one: the plain average
Add up the eleven ratings and divide by eleven. That is your starting point, and it is what the TGS builder shows live while you pick players.
Step two: the top-heavy bonus
Players above that average get a small extra weight. The further above, the bigger the nudge. That is why a squad of ten 84s and one 90 can rate higher than you would expect from the average alone.
Using it in practice
- Aim for a plain average slightly under the target and add one card that sits well above it.
- When you are one point short, replacing the lowest card is usually cheaper than upgrading a middle one.
- Goalkeepers count exactly the same as outfield players, and they are often the cheapest high ratings.
TGS tip: build the squad in our builder first, then reproduce it in game. Ten seconds of planning beats five failed submissions.
