The top of the chart
Two games sit above everything else, and sources disagree on which is first because they are counted differently. Tetris, created by Soviet engineer Alexey Pajitnov in the mid-1980s and released on dozens of platforms since, is credited with about 520 million sales across all versions. Minecraft, released by Mojang in 2011 after a 2009 alpha, is at about 425 million.
Third is Grand Theft Auto V at about 230 million, which is remarkable for a single release on a handful of console generations.
The rest of the top ten
Next comes Rockstar again: Red Dead Redemption 2 at about 87 million. Then Wii Sports at about 82.9 million, Mario Kart 8 and its Deluxe version at about 80 million, PUBG: Battlegrounds at about 75 million, Terraria at about 70 million, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3 tied at about 65 million. Super Mario Bros. and Human: Fall Flat share the next spot at about 58 million.
That puts two Take-Two games in the top four, a big reason analysts watch Grand Theft Auto VI so closely.
Best-selling consoles
On the hardware side, the PlayStation 2 still leads at about 160 million units, with the original Nintendo Switch close behind at about 156.6 million and the Nintendo DS at about 154 million. Game Boy and Game Boy Color together reached about 118.7 million and PlayStation 4 about 117.2 million.
Of today's machines, PlayStation 5 is at about 95 million, Xbox Series X|S at an estimated 35 million and Nintendo Switch 2 at about 23.7 million and climbing fast.
