Trailers that broke the internet
Rockstar first confirmed that a new Grand Theft Auto was well underway on February 4, 2022. The first trailer arrived in December 2023 for the company's 25th anniversary, revealing the title, the setting, the two leads and the target consoles. It broke YouTube viewing records within its first day.
Trailer 2 landed on May 6, 2025, captured entirely on PlayStation 5, alongside 70 new screenshots on Rockstar's site. It reached a record 475 million views across platforms in its first 24 hours and later won Best Game Trailer at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards. The game itself picked up anticipation awards at both The Game Awards and the Golden Joysticks in 2024 and in 2025.
A marketing campaign like a movie premiere
On August 27, 2026 an extended look at the game premiered on Netflix a few hours before it reached YouTube, and demand was big enough that both Netflix and Twitch had technical problems during the premiere. Journalists read the partnership as a sign that the game is being treated as a major entertainment tentpole rather than a normal launch.
On September 17, 2026, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a soundtrack of 34 original songs. A merchandise line inspired by Vice City followed a week later.
Vice City comes to real Miami
Since October 1, 2026, the roof of the Kaseya Center, the Miami Heat's arena, has been lit with a sign reading Welcome to Vice City. Rockstar and the Heat are also staging A Night in Vice City on November 18, when the Heat play the Milwaukee Bucks as Vice City, the night before the game unlocks, with the theme carried across uniforms, court and arena.
Industry watchers say the release date has shaped the whole year in games. Several publishers moved their own launches away from November, and Bloomberg's Jason Schreier described the shuffling as a game of 4D chess across the entire industry.
The money question
Take-Two does not give sales forecasts for a single game, but it does give company totals. After its first quarter of fiscal 2027, it reiterated a Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion for the year that includes the launch, and said pre-order sales had been unprecedented, with most buyers choosing the Ultimate Edition.
The series it builds on is enormous: Take-Two's June 2026 pre-order announcement put Grand Theft Auto at over 470 million units sold-in worldwide. Reported budgets of one to two billion dollars circulate widely, but they come from rumors and analysts, not from Rockstar, so treat them as unconfirmed.
