Mafia: The Old Country

A trip back in time

Mafia: The Old Country came out on August 8, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Developer Hangar 13 set it in Sicily in the early 1900s, the earliest period the series has visited, and recreated the island's towns, countryside and sulfur mines with a strong focus on period detail.

The lead character, Enzo Favara, grows up working in those sulfur mines before a twist of fate sends his life in a new direction. Like every Mafia game it is a story-driven, single-player experience rated Mature by the ESRB, so it is a grown-ups' game.

A focused, premium release

Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes described The Old Country as a premium experience in the vein of the earlier games, built around narrative, memorable characters and a beautiful environment, and delivered at what the team called incredible value. Instead of a giant open world it tells a tighter story, the approach that made the 2002 original a classic.

Its deluxe edition added a digital artbook full of concept art and developer notes, a nice look at how the team built its version of Sicily.

The series

The Mafia franchise started in 2002 and had sold-in more than 35 million copies across consoles and PC by the time The Old Country launched. Hangar 13, a 2K studio, made Mafia III in 2016 and the 2020 remake of the first game before this new chapter.

The setting gave the team a chance to show off one of the Mediterranean's most dramatic landscapes, with Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano, never far from the horizon in eastern Sicily.
