The parent company
Take-Two Interactive was founded in New York in September 1993 by Ryan Brant. Today it operates three big publishing labels: Rockstar Games, 2K and Zynga. Strauss Zelnick has led it since the late 2000s and serves as chairman and chief executive. In 2008 Take-Two turned down a takeover offer from Electronic Arts worth about two billion dollars.
Its biggest deals came recently. Take-Two bought mobile giant Zynga in a cash-and-stock deal valued at 12.7 billion dollars, which closed on May 23, 2022, and bought Gearbox, the Borderlands studio, from Embracer Group for 460 million dollars in June 2024.
How 2K was born
On January 24, 2005, Take-Two bought Visual Concepts, the maker of the NBA 2K games, from Sega for 24 million dollars. The next day it launched the 2K label to publish them. 2K moved from New York to Novato, California in 2007, added 2K Play for family games that year, and picked up the WWE license in January 2013 after THQ shut down.
Today 2K's studios include Visual Concepts, Firaxis, Hangar 13, Gearbox and Cloud Chamber. Its 2K Foundations program has refurbished more than 50 basketball courts for kids on six continents.
The 2026 lineup
In its August 7, 2026 report, Take-Two listed NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto as its two largest contributors, ahead of mobile hits such as Toon Blast and Match Factory. NBA 2K27 launched on September 4, 2026. Still dated TBA are PGA TOUR 2K27, WWE 2K27, Judas from Ghost Story Games, a project called ETHOS and the next BioShock.
For the year that includes Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two expects Net Bookings of 8.0 to 8.2 billion dollars, which it says would be a record.
