Early, which almost never happens
Borderlands 4 was first set for September 23, 2025. In April 2025, citing good progress, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford announced it would arrive early instead, and it launched on September 12, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. A Nintendo Switch 2 version was planned for October 3, 2025, but it was delayed, and in February 2026 Take-Two said work on it had been paused.
It is the fifth main Borderlands game and the first since Take-Two bought Gearbox in 2024.
A new planet and new heroes
The story moves to Kairos, an ancient planet hidden for thousands of years by a ruler called the Timekeeper. Players pick one of four new Vault Hunters, named Rafa, Harlowe, Amon and Vex, and team up with locals who want their freedom back, while familiar faces such as Claptrap, Moxxi and Lilith return. Story expansions have since added two more playable heroes.
The series is built for co-op. Borderlands 4 gives every player their own loot, scales levels for friends and lets each player set their own difficulty so a group can stay together.
The numbers
Before launch, 2K said the franchise had sold-in more than 87 million copies, and Pitchford said he expected Borderlands 4 to push it past 100 million. It became the biggest Borderlands launch on Steam and the franchise's biggest launch in the US, outselling Borderlands 3 by about 30 percent there.
The series started in 2009 and also includes Borderlands 2, The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and the Tales from the Borderlands story games.
